Emerald comes from the beryl family. When a stone is too light in color, it will  be considered a green beryl instead of Emerald. Its green colour comes from chromium.

Emerald registers 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale of hardness. It's considered a soft stone as most emeralds have inclusions making them more vulnerable to chips. 

The first known emerald mines were in Egypt. It is believed that these mines were worked as early as 3500BC.  Most of the Emeralds we have in stores are from Colombia. Colombia is known for their beautiful emeralds, and the most sought after Emeralds are from Colombia.

The most desirable green emeralds have vivid color saturation.
