The name Sapphire is derived from the Arabic word "safir" meaning blue. Sapphires can be found all over the world. The most exclusive and beautiful sapphire comes from Kashmir. Sapphires can be found in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tanzania, Madagascar, Myanmar, Australia and the United States. The largest sapphire in the world was found in Sri Lanka, weighing more than 5000 carats.
Sapphires comes in many different colors. Blue is the most popular color for sapphire. The color of a sapphire is determined by the amount of iron it contains and the closer it is to pure blue the more rare and expensive it becomes. Most sapphires are heat treated to make them more vivid and intense. Here at Benny's Gems we do have selection of unheated and heated sapphire to suit everyone preference.
Sapphire is also a very popular choice after diamond for engagement rings. Sapphire is one of the hardest gemstone measuring 9 on the Mohs scale of hardnesss. It was believed to be the favourite gem of Jupiter, the King of Gods, and in Roman times it was considered to be a symbol of eternal love.
